We first went to the Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo.
It was the "queen" of the 5 missions Spain put on it's frontier and was founded February 23, 1720. After Mexico won her independence, she secularized the missions. The mission land was divided among the Indians who had come to the mission and converted to Christianity. From that point forward, the buildings began to fall into disrepair. Beginning in the 1930's efforts began to protect what was left, and to reconstruct what had been destroyed.
I would recommend anyone visiting SA to visit Mission San Jose for sure. It is administered by the National Park Service. By the way, the church is now a consecrated church again under joint control with the Roman Catholic Church, a unique arrangement.
Later we drove up to the River Walk.
SA did a fine job with their River Walk. It's a great combination of flora, architecture, stores and restaurants, I believe.
Of course, if the weather was nice it would have been wonderful. Due to the cold, very few people were out and about. Even the boats weren't running. The sign at the sales office read, "Closed Due To Inclement Weather".
Brief weather report. After getting back from sight seeing, a thunder storm happened along with hail. Pulled in the slide to protect the slide cover. Been raining off and on since. They are calling for freezing drizzle tonight and into the morning. We're supposed to leave for Fredericksburg tomorrow, 60 miles northwest of SA. We'll probably wait until 11 am to shove off.
I'm having trouble uploading pics tonight. I'll try to do that later.
Revised 4/12/14. Added pictures. Combined Part 1 and Part 2
Enjoying following your blog and the description of your travels. Too bad the weather was bad for the River Walk visit. My wife has a niece that lives a little south of SA and we have been to the River Walk a couple of times in good weather. SA really has done a good job on it, great tourist attraction. Safe Travels.
ReplyDeleteHope your weather improves. Loved San Antonio and the river walk. Where did you stay?
