030714 National Museum of the Pacific War.

The Pacific War Museum is the reason we stopped in Fredericksburg.  I had originally allowed 1 day & night for the museum.  WRONG.  Actually, for what ever reason, the KOA required a 2 night stay.  But that worked out for the best.  We were able to go to Doss, TX our first afternoon in FB, which allowed us all day to do the museum.  WRONG again.  It is impossible to do the entire museum in one day unless one just runs through it. We ended up staying a 3rd night at the camp ground.

The museum is very thorough and comprehensive.  I recommend it to anyone who is interested in WWII history.

The main Pacific War museum is housed in the George H W Bush gallery. One of Mary's uncles was a driver for a general in the south pacific.  Could have been like this soldier.

This is a downed Navy fighter.

This is the President's Memorial.  It contains information of all the presidents who were associated with WWII, Either being president at the time or becoming president later.

This picture is of a naval admiral's barge which is painted to look like Admiral Nimitz's barge.

This is a Japanese Navy float plane.  It would have flown off battleships and maybe heavy cruisers.

The old Nimitz hotel serves as a museum of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz's life.  Upstairs in the building behind the stature is where the young Nimitz lived with his mother.

The Japanese people contributed a Japanese Peace Garden.  This Peace Garden was built in the original corral owned and used by Admiral Nimitz's grandfather when he ran the hotel.

After the war, Admiral Nimitz lead the effort to restore friendly relations with Japan.  He contributed money to a Japanese effort to restore and display the flagship of Admiral Togo when he defeated the Russian fleet during World War I.

There is also a Pacific War Combat Zone which houses a Grumman TBF (M) Avenger. This Avenger carries a M because it was built by General Motors during the war.

This is the type aircraft future president George Herbert Walker Bush was flying when he was shot down.

The Pacific War Combat Zone also has a complete PT boat,  PT309.

This is a veteran of WWII but saw action in the Mediterranean.  Our guide said all Pacific PT's were burned after the war rather than bring them home.

There is also a Navy hospital of the type used for evacuated wounded personnel.  It was one level back from the actual fighting.

Besides the museum Fredericksburg is a great to visit.  This is the Fredericksburg cemetery.  Note the name.  Written in German.  Fredericksburg was originally settled by Germans.

At least one of the Doss brothers is buried here.  I didn't know when I was in Fredericksburg, or I would have walked around the cemetery looking for him.

It has several wineries, plus an artist community.  There bare a number of museums, ranging from art to pioneer history. Lots of boutiques and restaurants line the main drag

Revised 4/12/14.  Added narrative and pictures.

  1. Those wi-fi dead zones are the pits. :) Fortunately, RV parks are getting the message and many now have decent performance. I think it is the advent of smart phones and the desire for many to use wi-fi for data to avoid the wireless companies' excessive data charges. So the RV parks are hearing more complaints. At least that is my theory.

Trip sound great. The Eisenhower Library & Museum in Abilene, Kansas has a great European Theater WW II museum.
