030214 It's Big!!!!

I'm talking about Texas silly.  The magnitude of this state will hit you once you enter on an interstate and see the first mile marker.  It's over 600 miles on I-20 and it doesn't go all the way to El Paso.

We're in San Antonio tonight. I tried to do a little post while in Bossier City but the Wi Fi didn't cooperate.  That was just a travel day plus family visit.  Nothing to see.  We stayed at the Diamond Jack Casino and RV Park.  I would never stay there again.

Yesterday we transited from Bossier City to Rockdale, TX, where we stayed at "Camp Walmart".  Couple of stories upon our entrance to Texas at the welcome center on I 20.

As we were walking back to the trailer after getting a Texas map, someone in a black SUV with Texas plates yelled, "Go Hokies".  Don't know who he was, whether it was a Texan who knew the Va Tech brand, or a transplanted Virginian.

Also, Mary found a nickel with a 1947 date & (D) Denver mint mark.  1947 just happens to be my birth year, and my last name begins w/ D.

Yesterday was so warm, we switched from thick sleeping bags to plain sheets.  Had the overhead vent going last night.  Got out a short sleeve T shirt for today.  We get to SA and it's hot enough to run the AC.  We left for downtown in our short sleeve shirts.  While going downtown on the bus, a very, very cold front came through.  It went from hot to cold in less than 30 minutes.  Needless to say, we were freezing.  Fortunately, Mary had gone back and picked up a thin jacket for me, otherwise, I'd have been a complete Popsicle.  I needed my heavy jacket with the fleece lining.   Once back at the trailer we ran the electric heater, again.

We visited the Alamo this afternoon.

It's a cool place to visit.  Lot's of history, to be sure.  Today is Texas' Independence Day.  While there, the Daughters of the Texas Republic staged a wreath laying.

One thing that is somewhat jolting is how small it is and how it's sort of swallowed up by the modern city.

Tomorrow we want to go see one of the other missions that were built around the time of the Alamo.  Also, stroll along River Walk.

Revised slightly 10/22/14.  Added Pictures.

  2. Sounds like one of what used to be called "Blue Northers" came through. Reminds me of my 14 years living in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Sounds like you are having a great trip.

  3. I have one of those maps where you put state stickers on it as you camp/pass through/or sight see in them. I was filling it quite quickly until now. Texas covered a huge area, however I think it will be about 5-7 days before we add another one. :)

  4. To David, we are so far. We're still looking for consistently warm weather. did talk to my son back home in Richmond, VA tonight. He said they are expecting up to 3 inches of snow. Guess it could be worse. :)
